Sydney is like New York in one way. Sydney takes its New Year's festivities very seriously. There are extensive fireworks displays put on at 9:00 for everyone's enjoyment and then a second, smaller display at midnight. Instead of fireworks being located in one place, they are shot off from the middle of Sydney Harbor, from the harbor bridge, from Darling Harbor, from the City Center and during the finale they are shot off the roofs of five skyscrapers including the Sydney Tower. Wow.
There was also a great party thrown in Hyde Park that included a giant screen TV plus live bands.

| People dance in the park to the sounds of "Mental is Anything" a popular Aussie band from the 80's. No, I haven't heard of them either but the crowd was singing their songs as they played. To the left you can see two of the foot 30-foot inflatable men that gyrated to the music. |
